Editorial: “Heroes Don’t Always Wear Capes”

For all the "essential" trades and service people working fearlessly and long, please show your appreciation of them and recognize the sacrifices these industries are also making "out there on the front". Not only are we out front, we are literally walking into the unknown! Plumbers, especially, have had a bad rap; literally being the butt of jokes (pun intended). We are also low on supplies, but have not been given the consideration by safety products distributors, as others "out on the front", since we do not have the official designation of "first responder". In comparison to others, we come across even more exposure to health hazards than some medical facilities. Many people also do not consider us to be "first responders'. But in times like these, we go where others hesitate. A sewage backup is a health concern. No disrespect to first responders, but we are the ones called upon for this and exposed to all the illnesses at the home or facility, gases, bacteria, debris, human waste, etc. We hope that all of you will reconsider your perception of "plumbing professionals". We encourage future generations to join this necessary industry. There is currently a shortage of qualified technicians in the plumbing industry. We don't foresee any computer or technology replacing a "plumber" anytime soon. Let us support each other during this time of uncertainty. Let us re-evaluate our values and perception. We are all equally susceptive to the ravages of this pandemic. Respect, consideration, community, and compassion is what we hope will replace misconception, apprehension, fear, and trepidation. Thank you for taking the time to read this. Stay Healthy...Stay Safe!
